More than 10 years ago, my journey in photography begins with taking a silhouette of trees at Pancur Hitam, Labuan during sunset. From there, I began my learning and practice of photography skill and knowledge with one ultimate purpose in my mind at that time, that is to promote the beauty of Labuan to the Internet.
After couple of years, I decided to pick on human interest as subject for my photography hobby. But here is the thing. I tend to be more introspective and find solace in quieter environments. While I appreciate the vibrancy of social interactions, I often prefer observing from the sidelines rather than engaging in conversation in public settings. Hence, I decided to do street photography. This is where I take picture candidly without engaging in social interaction. This is also when I have to study the boundaries of consent and candid, or when the situation permits to be photographed. Through a lot of reading, watching interviews and discussion, I found my own way and style.
Throughout the years, I’ve photographed many people in Labuan (candidly), before I start to slow down and focus on my career and my family.
To everyone that ended up in my pictures, I was a nobody, because we never communicate. But to me, you’re the people that shaped my art and perception. For that, I thank you all for having me in your life.
