Upstream (2024)

I did not expect anything when I chose to watch this movie on Netflix. I just need something to fill my Saturday afternoon – after having to cancel all plans due to some issue.

But the moment this movie start, my eye glued to the screen, my emotion going up and down – I just can’t stop watching this beautiful story. The story telling is so interesting, not too fast, not too slow. Just beautiful feeling.

It’s a great comeback story. A guy lose his job and due to his age, he find its difficult to secure a new job. He decided to become a delivery rider after failing interviews and job hunting. In my opinion, he’s a nice guy (earlier on, he covered his junior mistake, and took the fall instead), but he’s in his 40s – apparently considered too old to work in China. His savings depleted, his daughter accepted to an expensive school and his father is ill. In short, at this moment, his family hit rock bottom.

His hard work often met with frustration, feeling hopeless and disappointment. Finally, what lift him up, is his love for his family, his new work friend and his passion on doing his work (he built an app to enhance rider dealing with route and traffic). Watch this movie until the end. It will not disappoint.

This is a movie to all who work hard to live a better life. It tells the story of struggle, hardship and unfair treatment towards gig workers.

Finally, this is a reminder to treat people with kindness and respect.
