Borneo Art Festival 2024

Borneo Art Festival is my only event to visit annually to get a good dose of artistic performance and exhibition in Labuan. Labuan art scene kind of slow since the pandemic. Hardly can find any public event, but I know groups and individuals are working on their portfolio and growth. Hopefully someday we will have more art events in Labuan. I missed the time we organised our first Sebumbung Seni event many years ago.

A small reunion with Muqtadir BERNAMA and Hj Zulkiffle. They’re exhibiting photos of Labuan and in this exhibition, they dedicate a space in honor of arwah Ramlen Salleh. Ramlen Salleh was a talented photographer whom contributed to Labuan street & birding photography scene. I hope his work will be documented and properly managed for Labuan future generation reference.

Hana won the open category for Doodle Art. In the middle is Cikgu Azizi, one of the big name in Labuan and Sabah art. He’s managing Lavista Expression, a collective of artist in Labuan.

I asked Hana to pose next to a great work by Mohd Adzman Omar and Mohd Adzran Omar. Both of us really like their painting exhibited here. Their work exudes a strong feeling of ‘kampung’ atmosphere.

We visited the booths participated in this year BAF. I noticed the traditional craft are mainly manned by older people while younger participants are more towards modern crafts like customized figures and accessories with pop culture look. Not a problem for me. There’s a balance when you have cosplay and traditional fashion design organized in the same building. Borneo Art Festival after all is to celebrate Borneo arts and artists in Borneo, regardless of their background and interest. Great event, hope to be here again next year.
