It was decided that Malaysia will use Rukyah & Hisab method to observe the coming of Syawal.
I will present my personal opinion based on my observation and the simulation I did.
Rukyah
Observation on the location of the moon and the sun during Maghrib / sunset. For Rukyah, there are three criteria need to be satisfied. They are
- The moon age is not less than 8 hours
- The moon is 2 degree above horizon
- The moon is 3 degree from the sun
Hisab
This one is simply by just referring to Islamic calendar. Again, this is my opinion.
- 4 July = 29 Ramadhan
- 5 July = 30 Ramadhan
- 6 July = 1 Syawal
Conclusion
Based on my observation and understanding, the moon will set before the sun on Maghrib, 4th July. Therefore it does not meet all requirement on Rukyah. Refer to simulation below.
The Hilal can be seen on Maghrib 5th July.
I wish you Selamat Hari Raya Aidilftri, Maaf Zahir dan Batin
